When we spoke with Melanie, she was engaging and candid, reflecting on her journey while offering practical insights into the evolving role of tax leaders. Here she offers lessons for tax professionals aiming to redefine their roles.

Navigating Complexity in Tax Transformation

Leading a tax transformation project across 80 countries sounds daunting, but Melanie approached it with calmness and precision. “It’s not just about technology,” she emphasised. “The biggest challenge was aligning tax rules to business operations across geographies. Engaging local experts who understood not just the rules but their impact on the business was crucial.”Rather than merely adding technology to existing systems, Melanie’s team flipped the traditional approach. “We focused on systems and workflows, building architecture that could handle complexity from the start,” she explained. “The key wasn’t the software; it was the checks, balances, and workflows that ensured quality and consistency.”

Automation vs Human Expertise

In discussing the growing role of automation in tax, Melanie struck a balanced tone. “True automation isn’t about eliminating human input; it’s about understanding where human expertise adds value. Systems can automate repetitive tasks, but it’s the judgment calls and strategic decisions that require skilled professionals.”The secret, she revealed, lies in designing workflows that flag when human intervention is needed. “Automation can take us far, but the best systems are those that alert humans at critical decision points, ensuring that errors are caught before they become costly.”

From Compliance to Strategy: The Future of Tax Leadership

Melanie believes that the tax professionals of tomorrow need more than technical expertise - they need strategic insight. “If I could start over, I’d begin with tax policy,” she said. “Understanding why taxes exist and how policies are shaped provides a strategic lens that transforms how you approach compliance and risk.”This broader perspective allows tax professionals to step beyond the day-to-day grind of compliance work and contribute meaningfully to organisational strategy. “Leaders don’t want to hear about adjustments to tax codes,” Melanie observed. “They want to know how those adjustments affect the business - how they impact growth, profitability, or risk management. That’s the value we need to deliver.”

Overcoming the “Tax Geek” Stereotype

One of the biggest barriers for tax professionals, Melanie acknowledged, is shedding the perception of being purely technical experts. “Tax isn’t about numbers; it’s about understanding policy and its implications,” she said. “The key is framing tax conversations in terms of business outcomes. If we do X, it will save or cost us Y - that’s the language of strategic leadership. ”Melanie credited her time on the board of a non-profit for honing her leadership and communication skills. “Sitting on a board forces you to step out of the technical and think strategically. You learn how to translate complex tax concepts into language that non-experts can understand and, crucially, when to speak and how to make your point effectively. ”She encouraged aspiring leaders to seek opportunities that broaden their horizons. “Non Profit Boards and advisory roles can help you see the bigger picture and build the confidence to operate at a higher level.”

Advice for Tax Professionals

Melanie left us with practical advice for those aiming to elevate their careers:

  • Think Strategically: Start by understanding tax policy and its broader implications.

  • Communicate Effectively: Learn to translate technical concepts into actionable business insights.

  • Leverage Technology: While coding isn’t essential, understanding how to define and utilise tools is critical.

  • Expand Your Perspective: Seek roles or projects that push you beyond your technical comfort zone.
